-Here is the GW recap. UDC's can be found here.
It was certainly an ugly performance, but there were definite positives to take away, such as the play of Noel Wilmore, Wynton Witherspoon, and most of the freshmen. Keep in mind that pretty much any team would struggle without its starting point guard. I'm not trying to make excuses, you just have to keep everything in perspective.
There is no reason to panic if you're a GW fan; 10 days is a long time in college basketball. Expect Hobbs' squad to look like a completely different team in the season opener against Mount St. Mary's on November 10.
In other GW news, congratulations to men's soccer's Greg McKay, who was named to ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-District First Team.
So it's been a while, but since another school year has started, posting will become frequent again.
The Hatchet has the non-conference schedules for the men's and women's basketball squads. I fully understand the issues that Athletic Director Jack Kvancz cites in creating the annual slate that is largely slammed by fans and pundits alike. After all, you can only play with the hand you're dealt. However, here is what I don't understand: is it unrealistic to think that local schools like George Mason or Old Dominion wouldn't be willing to start a home-and-home series? Even American would look better on the schedule than Mount St. Mary's (although Fred Carter of ESPN is a graduate).
Elsewhere at GW, both soccer teams are off to hot starts. With three seconds left in overtime, Erick Perez-Segnini scored from about 20 feet out to give the men's team a 2-0 start and the program's first-ever Adidas D.C. College Cup title. The women's squad equaled the start of its male counterparts by winning the TD Banknorth Classic over the weekend. Former women's basketball walk-on Amie Kern was named the defensive most valuable player of the event.
Good start for GW sports. Hopefully this can be a trend that continues throughout the coming year.
