Update, 1.53 p.m. - The first half has shown a fiery UMBC team eager for their match-up to avenge a beatdown at the Smith Center last season. GW leads at the half 28-27 but did not take their first lead in the game until 1:40 remained. The Colonials stayed in the game thanks to the brilliant play early from Wynton Witherspoon, scoring 8 of the Colonials first 10 points. Spoon got in foul trouble early, however, and was forced to sit for the better part of the half. UMBC has relied primarily in their depth in the backcourt. Ray Barbosa leads the team with 8 points and Brian Hodges is right behind him with 6. The team is 5 for 8 from 3-point territory. Look for more aggressive on-the-ball defense from the Colonials in the second half to keep UMBC from firing away.
Update, 2.56 p.m. - As the Colonials stepped up their defense in the second half, they ran away with the game winning by a final score of 57-42. Led by an incredible effort by Wynton Witherspoon scoring 22 points on 11-15 from the field, the Colonials seemed to have their game working on all cylinders in the second half. This should be the perfect tune-up as they head out west to the Pauley Pavilion where they will face #7 UCLA.
